Wine Australia

Collecting Wine

Collecting fine wine is an age-old practice and one pursued traditionally by private collectors, wealthy individuals and wine market speculators alike. Wine markets are cyclical - the world of wine investment has been lucrative in the past and will be again in the future.

a few facts…
According to statistics from the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation (AWBC):

  • Wine sales within Australia grew steadily over the decade to October 2007 by up to 4% a year
  • Exports of Australian wine reached a record A$3.02 billion in July 2007

BUT caution has crept into the markets of late…

  • Australian wine exports to the rest of the world declined by 12.9% in volume and 13.3% in value in the year to August 2008

market opportunity & diversification
It’s essential to note at this point that the market for premium, niche wines is different to the market for lesser known brands. Demand for premium wine is still strong as is the potential for profit from it. For example, the very finest French wines have continued to have a growth track record over recent years. Evidence suggests that diversification is a key factor for returns; the finest wines in a fully diversified global collection accumulate the greatest value.

As with all asset classes, investors in wine can be categorised as having a short, medium or long-term view. At Cellar Link we realise that everybody’s needs are different; you may wish to collect wines which you lay down in a cellar for your own regular drinking, invest a lump sum seeking maximum return or indeed take a long-term view on your collection but be open to opportunities in the secondary market.

In cautious markets, it is all the more important to offer improved service, spot the best markets for value and penetrate the marketplace opening up new avenues for sale. Cellar Link services are tailored to offer collectors the best possible support and advice necessary to maximise returns.

wine storage
Generally speaking, fine wines need time in the cellar to age gracefully under the proper conditions before they mature and reach their peak drinking window, at which point you may wish to sell the wine for a profit (or indeed drink it yourself). We can store your wine at our top-class managed storage facilities so you can have peace of mind that your wine is in the optimum climate-controlled conditions when you cellar with us.
